Although the history in the region that we know today as the State of Quintana Roo has several centuries since the Mayan settlements, it was not until November 25, 1902, that this area became a federal territory, detaching from Yucatan to whom it belonged. until then, at this point, it begins to write his own story. Its name is in honor of Andrés Quintana Roo, famous Yucatecan writer, politician, poet, and journalist,
Although the State of Quintana Roo was in the political and military sights since the early 1900s, it was always a pawn in the hands of politicians of the time, but it was in 1974 when it began to be considered an important territory when it reached a population of 80,000 inhabitants and produced enough earnings to be able to pay for their own public administration and to become a State, as stipulated in Article 73 of the Constitution. This was the turning point for Quintana Roo from 1902 until then, it was a constant intermittence between being dependent or not on the state of Yucatán.
This intermittency caused a delay in the economic development of the area, which despite its natural beauty and tourist potential that we all know today, was not developed for that same reason.
Despite being one of the youngest states in Mexico, its growth and development have been impressive, so that today it reaches important places as a world tourist destination, as well as being the state with the highest annual growth.
Regarding tourism, which is the main economic activity in the area, the state obtains 35% of the country's total tourism, contributing 4.5% of the national GDP. In real estate, Playa del Carmen is one of the cities in Mexico with the highest demand for real estate, which makes it the perfect area to generate income from vacation rentals.
Tulum ranks fourth in AirbnB reservations worldwide, and several points in the state have been nominated (and winners as well) in the World Travel Awards. But not only Tulum is the winner or nominated in these awards, year after year the cities of Quintana Roo and Riviera Maya are nominated and winners of different areas.
The real estate offer that is annually used for vacation rentals increases every day, as does the number of travelers who come for short and long stays. In 2019, the number of passengers during the year arriving to Cancun airport was 25,481,989.
In 2020, even with the COVID crisis, Riviera Maya continued to move large numbers of people who have preferred to spend the long quarantine and pandemic in a less crowded place, with a better climate, and with the natural and cultural beauties than La Riviera Maya offers us.
